About the Pinguinim Community

The Pinguinim Community is actually a rebirth of an older project, back in the 2010s, by the name of PenguinCSC. It was a freelance business I started due to the 2008 dot-com bubble bursting. Back then, climate change was the hype, so I wanted to install Linux (namely Ubuntu) on old computers, thus recycling them by reusing them. I got lucky: Microsoft had just released Windows 8, and a lot of the existing computers were not compatible with the new UI requirements, so a lot of people turned to me for advice. Naturally, I advised switching to Linux. Fast-forward a few years, I noticed a growing interest in the GNU/Linux ecosystem by everyday people who got fed up with the UX changes imposed upon them by Microsoft. Furthermore, I noticed an uptick in sheer volume of bad Linux-related advice online, and I felt like I had to step in and contribute my knowledge and experience regarding best practices for the installation and use of the Linux OS and applications. Around those years I was approached by someone from the local FLOSS community who, up until then, managed the Israeli Ubuntu Community on Facebook. He explained that he was about to start a new job and wouldn't have time to manage the community anymore. He knew of me and thought I was the best candidate to take over for him. I accepted immediately!.

And that's how the Pinguinim Community was born 🥳

I had a few volunteers helping me out over the years, some with sorting through old hardware, checking what was usable, and building computers out of it so we could donate them. A few helped me with logo design and organizing community events, but mostly it was (and still is) a one-man show - my passion for helping others make the best of their computers.

Being based on the FLOSS philosophy, I've incorporated the same values as part of the community:

  • All content and activity should be free (as in freedom) for everyone.
  • Transparency
  • Inclusion
  • Empowerment
  • Collaboration

In short: everything that makes a group of people (a community), with a shared interest, stronger.
